This study is on the licentious representation and (de) empowerment of women in music through lyrics of contemporary hip hop music in Nigeria. This research considered music to be a form of expression which is used to convey the experiences of the society through its content thus it served as an avenue through which messages and ideologies are conveyed. The data were collected from a sample of five songs from selected popular contemporary Hip Hop artistes: Ajibade (Mr Easy) David Adeleke (Davido) Five songs were selected from each of these artistes for analysis. The study used context of situation within the Systemic Functional Linguistic framework of analysis. It considered field as experiences and perceptions of the music lyrics within its context where these experiences include social injustice, misogyny, derogatory reference to women. The study showed that the depiction of women and sexuality is a trend which is gradually becoming a norm in the Nigerian Hip Hop music. It concluded that the issues raised in the lyrics are a product of the environment in which the lyrics are written. This study recommended that music should be considered a path to promote transmission of acceptable cultural value of the Nigerian society also be utilized for positive representation and image of women in the lyrics of contemporary songs.
